              Re:        Notification of Pending FSC Certification Evaluation of University of Kentucky

Summary:  As part of an FSC assessment, SCS is currently seeking stakeholder input regarding the forest management of University of Kentucky.  Please comment via email, or call our offices or representatives to discuss (contact info below).

The University of Kentucky Department of Forestry Cooperative Extension Service is seeking Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) endorsed certification through their involvement in the Center for Forest and Wood Certification. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC sets standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.

The University of Kentucky is embarking on an effort to facilitate wood and forest certification in the central hardwood and central and southern Appalachian regions. The University of Kentucky is the administrative group manager for 5,830 acres of hardwood forest in Kentucky seeking FSC certification. Almost all activity related to forest management is the responsibility of each group member. The charter members of the forest management group include an industrial landowner of approximately 4,500 acres based in Rockcastle, Pulaski, Lincoln, Casey, Boyle, and Marion Counties. There are an additional three family forest group members based in Casey, Lincoln, and Marion Counties with a total of approximately 1,330 acres.

Scope and Certification Evaluation Process

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), a FSC-accredited certification body based in Emeryville, California, will conduct this FSC evaluation.

Performance will be evaluated against the FSC-US Forest Management Standard (v1.0), and the FSC Group Management standard, FSC-STD-30-005 (v1.0).  Copies of the standards are available from http://www.scscertified.com/docs/FSC-US_Forest_Management_Standard_v1_0.pdf and http://www.fsc.org/fileadmin/web-data/public/document_center/international_FSC_policies/standards/FSC-STD-30-005_V1-0_EN_Group_Entities_FM_Groups.pdf

The Evaluation Process Includes the Following Phases:

  1. Public notification: distribution of the standard and solicitation of comments on the certification applicant;
  2. Audit planning and document review;
  3. Field assessment: A representative sample of field sites and operations within the defined forest area are inspected by a team of auditors;
  4. Stakeholder consultation;
  5. Synthesis of findings: Compliance with the standard is ascertained and the certification decision is formulated
  6. Reporting:   A draft report describing the evaluation process, findings, and certification decision is produced;
  7. Peer review: The evaluation report is peer reviewed by 2 independent natural resource professionals;
  8. Delivery of final certification report;
  9. Certification decision: a public summary of the certification report is released, if certification is awarded.
